- Abstract:
The article reports on the collection and treatment of sanitary wastewater flowing in a 176 square mile area surrounding Madison, Wisconsin by the Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District. The collected wastewater are treated at the Nine Springs Wastewater Treatment Plant which can treat 40 million gallons of wastewater a day. It is stated that the processes used in treating sanitary wastewater so it can be safely returned to the environment has resulted in the production of primary sludge that need further treatment for land applications required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR).
