    • Abstract:
This article chronicles the early life of Scottish poet and novelist Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832), largely remembered today as "the father of the historical novel," as well as the father of the "regional" novel. Scott was a born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on August 14, 1771. In 1773, at the age of eighteen months, Walter came down with polio, with made him lame in the right leg for the rest of his life. To help him recover, his parents sent him to live at his grandparents' farm. There Walter learned to love the local traditions and language. He stayed at the farm on and off until 1777. In 1783, Scott entered the University of Edinburgh to study classics.
