- Abstract:
A literary criticism of the novel "Emma," by Jane Austen is presented. The author describes the character of Emma and explores the symbolic significance of her character. She discusses the resemblance between Mary Brunton's novel "Self-Control" and "Emma." She explains the sadness which some people get from "Emma." She concludes that the novel is ultimately not pastoral nor romance nor anti-romance nor anti-pastoral, then, but something closer to life.
