    • Abstract:
Aesthetic fear is not authentic fear but an artful simulation of what is crude, inchoate, nerve-driven and ungovernable in life. The evolutionary advantage of such fear is the preparation for the authentic experience, unpredictable and always imminent. The aesthetic of fear can also become the vehicle by which fear is, at least temporarily, obviated. What is feared most is not death but the loss of meaning, since to lose meaning is to lose one's humanity. It is the fear of each individual that the very species may become extinct in its complicity with the predator—the cannibal or vampire—within. It is these fears that are so powerfully dramatized by the artists of the tragic and the grotesque.
