      The article considers the historical writings produced during the Scottish Enlightenment, comparing those written prior to the French Revolution with those written after 1789. Some of the writings considered include the "History of England" by David Hume, "Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith, "Essay on the History of Civil Society" by Adam Ferguson, and "History of the Reign of Charles V" by William Robertson. Other topics include historiography, changes to the philosophy of history moving from ideas of progress to social considerations of historical events, and the importance of commerce to the development of modern history.
