Booklist Reviews 2015 January #1

This annotated bibliography of more than 150 historical novels for grades 7 through 12 (published between 2000 and 2013) addresses issues that are found in the National Standards for History and Testing. There are nine chapters, beginning with the period 1585–1759 ("Colonization and Settlement)" and ending with 1980 to the present ("Contemporary America"). Each novel's entry lists the author, title, publication year, and appropriate grade level and includes a few discussion questions and links to resources. Some topics (such as "Revolution and Slavery") include adult-fiction selections as well. Sample authors are Laurence Yep, Avi, Toni Morrison, and Sharon Draper. A bibliography of resources on historical fiction for the classroom completes this volume. This is an excellent resource guide for librarians, history teachers, and public librarians.
