      The article examines the year-to-year movement in the wage differential between skilled and unskilled workers, 1907-1972, using union contract rates in the construction industry in the U.S. A number of hypotheses that have been suggested as explanations for changes in the skill differential. A narrowing of the skill differential since the early 1960s is predicted by the author's model. The increasing level of illegal immigrants contributed in the retardation the expected decrease in premium paid to skilled workers.
