      An essay is presented which discusses the role that the aesthetics of crime during the late 18th and early 19th centuries had on the development of detective fiction in the late 19th century. An overview of philosophy on aesthetics, including that of German philosopher Immanuel Kant, is provided. The depiction of murder in Sherlock Holmes fiction is discussed.
