      This article presents a reprint of the article "Connecting the Unique and the Universal" by Joyce Carol Oates that first appeared in "The Writer" magazine in January 1973. In the piece Oates presents a first person narrative that explores her approach to the process of creative writing and her contention that individuals are equal to the challenges that confront them.
