    • Abstract:
Dating probably from 1781, Ramón de la Cruz's La despedida is typical of sainetes which dealt with theatrical customs. It offers above all various testimonies of eighteenth-century dramaturgy and reveals interesting details about actors, their standing, and their way of declaiming and interpreting both sweet and pathetic expressions. This annotated edition of the sainete, unpublished until now, permite us to understand not only the strategies that captured the public's attention, but also the problems and relations among the various acting companies, the aesthetic principals that the actors drew upon when interpreting the texts, and so on.
