The article focuses on the popular imagery and academic history associated with the Classical Greek philosopher Socrates. An overview of the historical information confirmed about the intellectual is provided. It is suggested that Socrates has been maintained as an intellectual icon throughout all of history and continues to be such in the 21st century. Details are also given outlining the origins of Socrates' popular image through the later literary work of his pupil Plato. Questions are raised regarding the legitimacy of his image as a historical figure or as a role-model for 21st century thought.
