    • Abstract:
This study considers the construction of characters in the Spanish Golden-Age comedia through an analysis of three plays by Lope de Vega: La dama boba (1613), El castigo del discreto (1598–1601) and La buena guarda (1610). Following a general discussion of the issue of characterization, we examine the evolution of the character of Finea, and the behaviour of the wise Ricardo and Clara the abbess, in order to show that their conduct is conditioned by generic conventions of the comedia, which would explain their alleged psychological anomalies. • Abstract:
