    • Abstract:
The article presents a case study of a Wisconsin student who attended a special high school drop out prevention program called the Work and Learn Center (WLC). The student was a young African American who had dropped out of high school and decided to join the WLC against the wishes of his family. The program paired the student with a job and a continuation of his high school classes. This program was credited with turning the student around. The former high school dropout eventually attended the University of Wisconsin with the goal of becoming a teacher. The authors highlight a number of other drop out prevention programs and provide general statistics related to high school drop out rates in the United States.
